The Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) Ghana Chapter in collaboration with the Rescue Lives Foundation extended the festivities to Nigerian inmates at Nsawam Prison.
The delegations were led by the Vice Chairman of NIDO Africa, Rev. Ebenezer O. Alabi and Founder of Rescue Lives Foundation and Board of Trustee of NIDO Africa, Chief Calistus Elozieuwa
The event was held on October 1 as Nigeria marked its 64th Independence Day anniversary.
Speaking to the guests, he expressed deep gratitude to the Nigerian community in Ghana for remembering them during their difficult times.
He shared some of the harsh realities faced by inmates, including health crises that have tragically led to the death of some inmates due to a lack of financial support.
“Because of lack of finance, we have lost four Nigerians inmates who needed treatment”
“We write appeals, but they are often disregarded. Even when considered, they demand money, and if we can’t provide it, the process resets. We don’t have money. If the Nigerian community could open an account for us, we would be grateful,” Austin pleaded.
Despite his struggles, Austin remains optimistic, holding on to the hope of freedom for himself and his fellow inmates.
“I believe I will leave here. That is my prayer and the prayer of every prisoner here,” he said.
