Utweets reports that the party, which played a significant role in Kwankwaso’s political rise, hopes to rekindle its relationship with the former Kano State Governor.
In an interview with the BBC, PDP Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagun addressed Kwankwaso’s recent remarks, where he declared the PDP “dead” and incapable of future success. Damagun defended the PDP’s legacy, emphasizing its resilience and strength over the past 26 years.
“The PDP remains a formidable force in Nigerian politics, operating under the same name with governors and senators across all regions. Even if four other parties were to merge, they would still not match the PDP’s strength,” Damagun asserted.
He noted that while people are entitled to their opinions, Kwankwaso’s critique was unfair, given the political victories he achieved while a member of the PDP. Damagun recalled the party’s ability to withstand challenges in the past, including the 2015 defections, which many thought would spell its end.
“Back in 2015, when they left, some predicted the party’s demise. If the PDP didn’t die then, I don’t see why anyone would claim it is dead now. Excluding the ruling APC, the PDP remains the only party capable of winning elections,” Damagun said.
Responding to Kwankwaso’s claims of marginalization within the PDP, which he cited as the reason for his departure, Damagun acknowledged the validity of some of Kwankwaso’s grievances. He revealed that during Kwankwaso’s initial attempts to leave the party, significant efforts were made to address his concerns, though these were ultimately unsuccessful.
“Despite past issues, there is no party better suited for Kwankwaso than the PDP. The party nurtured his political career and elevated him to national prominence. We hope he will reconsider and work with us to rebuild our party and challenge this oppressive government,” Damagun said.
The acting chairman emphasized that the PDP remains a welcoming platform for its former members, including those who left under contentious circumstances. “Whenever they return, we treat them equally and give them opportunities like everyone else,” he added.NIGERIANS ARE HAPPY WITH TINUBU| JUST A YEAR PLUS IN OFFICE, TINUBU HAS DONE WHAT NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAS NEVER DONE BEFORE IN OFFICE. Damagun concluded by stating that the party intends to reach out to Kwankwaso, despite his current frustrations.
