Speaking to The Punch, Oba Akanbi noted that Sharia law has long been a part of Yoruba culture, particularly in his domain, Iwo. He cited existing institutions and practices, such as Sharia-compliant banks and the Sharia college in Iwo, as evidence of its presence and acceptance in the region.
“We have Sharia banks in the South-West, and these banks operate according to Sharia law. Sharia law has been in Iwo for over 100 years, and there is a Sharia college in Iwo,” the monarch stated.
He further highlighted the flexibility in legal choices available to Muslims, pointing out that they have the option to resolve matters such as inheritance and divorce through customary courts, high courts, or Sharia courts.
Addressing Misconceptions
The Oluwo addressed concerns raised by critics who argue that Sharia law could disrupt the predominantly Christian and traditional Yoruba culture of the South-West. According to him, Sharia law is specifically designed for Muslims and does not impose itself on people of other faiths.
“Sharia law is in the constitution of Nigeria, and it’s visible in the North, where there are Nigerians. Anywhere we have Muslims, there is Sharia. If any other person likes it, they can convert to Islam, and Muslims can also convert to Christianity. Everyone is free,” he explained.
He stressed that the rights of Muslims to practice their faith through Sharia should not interfere with the rights of others, urging Nigerians to view the matter from a perspective of religious freedom.
The Planned Sharia Council Inauguration
The controversy arose from the planned inauguration of a Sharia Council by an Islamic organization at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre in Oyo State. The event, originally scheduled for January 11, 2025, was met with widespread criticism from both Christian and traditional groups, who viewed it as an attempt to impose northern-style Sharia governance in the South-West.
Following the backlash, the organizers announced an indefinite postponement of the event, citing the need to address the concerns raised by the public.
