Speaking in an interview with The Sun, the former lawmaker urged the North to focus on constructive contributions to national development, particularly through Northerners holding key positions in Tinubu’s administration.
Sani highlighted the significant roles allocated to Northerners within Tinubu’s government, stating, “He has given all the key institutions and ministries to the North. A Northerner from Kaduna State is the Chief of Defence Staff. A Northerner from Adamawa State is the National Security Advisor. The Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of State for Agriculture are both Northerners. Similarly, the Minister of Defence and Minister of State for Defence hail from Jigawa and Zamfara States, respectively. Until recently, a Northerner also served as the Minister of Education.”
Sani did not shy away from addressing the silence of Northern elites during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, despite what he described as glaring failures. He noted that Buhari’s administration, which lasted eight years, did not deliver significant infrastructure or developmental projects to the North, despite holding the presidency for 96 months.TOP NEWS TODAY! “Let us tell ourselves the home truth,” Sani said. “When our own was in power for eight years, what did he do? For all the failures, people kept quiet. They refused to hold him to account or criticise him. They refused to say, ‘We voted for you, and you failed.’”
Sani further elaborated on unmet expectations during Buhari’s tenure:
- Road Infrastructure: No major roads were constructed to serve Northern Nigeria.
- Mambila Power Plant: The power project was left uncompleted despite repeated promises.
- River Niger Dredging: The river remained undeveloped, limiting its potential for economic activities.
- Key Expressways: The Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Kano-Kaduna-Lagos expressways were not dualised.
- Agricultural Investments: Billions of naira were reportedly spent on agriculture with little tangible impact.
He criticized the appointments made during Buhari’s tenure, stating that Northerners in government failed to prioritize the region’s interests.
Challenge to Northern Elites
Sani questioned the moral authority of Northern elites now criticizing Tinubu’s administration while remaining silent during Buhari’s. “If you couldn’t hold your son to account, remained silent, and folded your arms during Buhari’s administration, what conscience do you have now to threaten someone else with re-election?” he asked.TOP NEWS TODAY!
