Youth and Students Advocates for Development Initiative (YSAD), a non-partisan organisation dedicated to promoting good governance, accountability, and the rule of law, has condemned the suspension of Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and the state House of Assembly members, and called on President Bola Tinubu to rescind what it called “unwarranted and deeply troubling action”....CONTINUE READING THE ARTICLE FROM THE SOURCE>>>
The group in a statement, signed by Obinna Nwagbara, its executive director, stated that the suspension lacked both legal and moral justification, and constitutes a dangerous overreach that threatens the very fabric of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and processes.
They observed that though the situation in Rivers State is undoubtedly complex, fraught with political tensions and competing interests, that resolution of such a conflict must adhere to the established mechanisms of the constitution and the principles of natural justice.
YSAD said that the suspension of a democratically elected governor and the River State House of Assembly sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the will of the people, who entrusted their mandate to that individual.
According to them, “It is a slippery slope that could erode the autonomy of state governments and pave the way for undue federal interference in matters that rightfully fall within the purview of state jurisdictions”.
They said that the presence of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), within the President’s cabinet is a matter of significant concern.

Wike, according to YSAD, has been widely identified as a central figure in the ongoing political turmoil within Rivers State, a key proponent of the political forces aligned against the current governor, and arguably the de facto spokesperson for the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who have initiated impeachment proceedings.
“To have such a prominent figure, deeply implicated in the crisis, serving in a powerful position within the federal government creates an undeniable conflict of interest and casts a shadow over the legitimacy of any intervention by the federal government in the affairs of Rivers state”.
Consequently, YSAD called on President Bola Tinubu, to rescind the suspension of the Governor of Rivers State, ensuring that the impeachment process initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly is conducted in a fair, transparent, and constitutional manner, free from external interference.
This is as they also called for re-evaluation of the role and position of Nyesom Wike, in his administration, given his alleged involvement in the Rivers State political crisis.
They also called on President Tinubu to reaffirm his commitment to upholding the principles of federalism and respecting the autonomy of state governments, as well as engage in constructive dialogue with all stakeholders in Rivers state, to find a lasting and peaceful resolution to the political crisis…CONTINUE READING>>>
